The Impaired Driver Program (IDP) is a 7 week program that provides education to drivers convicted of a DWI/DWAI offense. The IDP is designed to provide an in-depth education regarding high-risk alcohol and other drug choices to assist drivers in identifying and changing high-risk behaviors.
The program is a state curriculum called The Change Company designed to help each participant reduce risk for any type of alcohol or drug problem. The goal of the Change Company is to promote positive, lasting change through 'journaling' which emphasizes real-life application and helps drivers to apply meaningful and relevant information to their lives.
The IDP is part of New York State's effort to lessen the incidence of injury, disability and fatalities that result from alcohol and other drug related motor vehicle crashes. It also reduces the risk of re-offending for another drunk driving offense. Drivers who are eligible for a conditional license must enroll at the DMV. Drivers may also be referred by the courts even if they aren't eligible for a conditional license and still must enroll through the DMV.
Class length: once a week for 7 weeks, lasting 2 – 2 ½ hours. (16 hours)
Cost for the Program: $234.00 and must be paid prior to the first class. Attendance is mandatory for all 16 hours. If a driver does not meet all of the requirements of the conditional license, they will be dropped from the IDP which will result in the loss of driving privileges.
